At the risk of sounding uneducated in my favorite hobby, I wanted to talk about sewing rules that we break. Maybe you are perfect and you never break any rules but I'm willing to bet I'm not the only one out there skipping a step or two. So let's talk about them, yes?
1. Don't Hold Pins in Your Mouth
I once read a horror story online of a gal who used to hold pins in her mouth. She accidentally inhaled the pin and had to get surgery to remove the pin from her lungs. Yikes. I think she even got an infection of some kind which resulted in more health issues, if the first part of her injury didn't freak you out. Every now and then I'll hold on in my mouth and then quickly remember this story.
2. Always Use Pins
You'll find me blazing through a project so fast that I don't even use my pointy prickly friends. I guess this makes me somewhat of a messy sewist but oh well. Stopping to reach for a pin or remove one always feels like it's slowing me down, even with a wrist pin cushion. How often do you use pins?
3. Switching Needles on Your Machine
Ok this is a rule that I break quite often. Why? I just forget to switch my needle on my machine! I get away with it most of the time but every now and then I punch holes too big into a fabric. Sometimes I sew a woven fabric with a jersey needle and I'm lucky that most of my projects turn out nice. I should do better, honestly.
4. Pressing Seams While Sewing
Do you always pull out the iron while sewing? I wish I did. This step can transform a project from awful to beautiful (✨✨✨) I'm not gonna lie, I still have a blouse in my closet that I haven't pressed out the hem on. What am I waiting for??
So with all that being said, which rules you do tend to break?
I definitely break all the rules too, never press anything, unless maybe at the end it is really creased! I use pins a lot, but never tack anything. Some things do just seem to slow you down and not matter that much?!
